Welcome!

The Benthos Lab (Laboratório de Bentos) is located at the Center for Marine Studies - Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, since 1981. We carry out basic (taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology) and applied (environmental monitoring and assessment) research in Paranaguá Bay and many other coastal regions of Brazil aiming to provide sound knowledge for a more rational and suitable management of natural resources.

Research Highlights

Brazilian Journal of Oceanography

We have an article published in Brazilian Journal of Oceanography,  about the state of knowledge, conservation and threats on the Seagrass and Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (VAS) Habitats off the Coast of Brazil.

Journal of Marine Systems

We have just published an article in Journal of Marine Systems about the flood regime as a driver of the distribution of mangrove and salt marsh species in a subtropical estuary.

Aquatic Toxicology

We have a new article published in Aquatic Toxicology about the antioxidant responses of oil spill in estuarine invertebrates

Ecological Indicators

We have just published a paper in Ecological Indicators showing that benthic functional diversity decreases in response to seawage discharges.

Marine Pollution Bulletin

We have a new paper related to contaminantion by sewage in Paranaguá Bay. Kalina Brauko, Fernanda Souza, Mauricio Camargo and Paulo Lana have just published a paper on the "Spatial variability of three benthic indices for marine quality assessment in a subtropical estuary of Southern Brazil"

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution

Our paper just published in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution provides sound evidence that there are  two cosmopolitan clades of Saccocirridae with specific habitat preferences.

Journal of Environmental Management

We have developed a new index for assessing the vulnerability of peri-urban mangroves. The paper was published in the Journal of Environmental Management.

2016

Congratulations to Thayanne Lima Barros who has presented her MSc dissertation at the Postgraduate Course in Zoology at Federal University of Paraná. Thayanne assessed oxidative stress in the polychaete Laeonereis culveri after abrupt contamination and decontamination by sewage.

2016.

Congratulations to Alessandro Lívio Prantoni who has successfully presented his PhD thesis at the PostGraduate Course in Coastal and Oceanic Systems from Federal University of Paraná. Alessandro’s thesis showed new global records of marine oligochaetes and classified them in two big groups. Nice work, well done!

2016

Leonardo Sandrini is now an Associate Professor at the Center for Marine Studies (CEM) of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), where he teaches Statistics and Probability, and Experimental Statistics for undergraduate courses.

2015

Congratulations to Nálita Maria Scamparle Teodoro who has presented her MSc dissertation at the Postgraduate Course in Zoology at Federal University of Paraná. By using molecular data, she showed that Pharyngocirrus gabriellae (Saccocirridae:Annelida) is an amphi-atlantic and amphi-american species. Well done!

2015

Maikon Di Domenico is now an Associate Professor professor at the Center for Marine Studies (CEM) of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), where he teaches Statistics for undergraduate courses.

Congratulations to Mathilde Lemoine, who will present her MSc thesis, supervised by Paulo Lana and Tom Moens and carried out at the Benthos Lab, at Ghent University, by the end of June 2015. Mathilde is a student of the Erasmus Mundus Biodiversity and Conservation Program. She has carried out an extensive analysis of resource utilization and trophic position of puffer fish in different foraging grounds from a subtropical bay as revealed by stable isotopes. Mathilde is now back to Europe, and we hope she will rapidly recover from the hectic but professionally gratifying five months she spent in Pontal do Sul.

05/06/2015

Leonardo Sandrini is now a post-doc Research Fellow (PNPD Programme) at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. He will be much missed in Pontal do Sul, but we hope he will be back soon!

28/05/2015

Congratulations to Gisele Morais who has successfully presented her PhD thesis at the PostGraduate Course in Coastal and Oceanic Systems from Federal University of Paraná. Gisele's thesis has questioned the validity of current models which assess benthic distribution along estuarine gradients, using the subtropical Bay of Guaratuba as a study case. Well done, Gisele, and good luck!

30/04/2015

Congratulations to Luiz Paulo da Silva who has just presented his MSc dissertation at the Postgraduate Course in Zoology at Federal University of Paraná. Luiz described a new species of Owenia (Annelida) from southern Brazil and carried out a number of rather interesting experiments on its ability to select grains for tube-building.

13/03/2015

The first published paper of our cooperation with the Erasmus Mundus Program EMBC+ is now available. Siel Wellens has worked a lot during her stay at the Center for Marine Studies and the interesting results of her M Sc dissertation have just been published by Hydrobiologia. Very soon you will know about similar work done by Frederike Böhm and Nina Schlapfer.
